Office of the Comptroller of the Currency

Finance intern

June 2022 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

This was a challenging but rewarding internship. I learned a ton and have found a career I think I am going to enjoy

What I wish was different

Maybe a little more communication about what to expect during the internship. I found the work fascinating but even after interviewing and receiving the internship, I didn’t know what to expect

Advice

I would only apply for the job if you have an interest in banking or bank regulation. The internship is pretty rigorous and if you don’t have a passion for the subject, it’s easy to get bored or frustrated.

Bank Examiner/Analyst Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed moving to Boston, MA for the summer (a city I had never visited) and learning about a field of business I had not thought of prior. It was a rewarding experience to work with professionals in the bank supervision field to gain insight into what bank supervision entails and to experience first-hand the integral part that bank examination plays in the world of business today.

What I wish was different

I would have liked a stricter schedule for the 10 weeks I was with the OCC (Office of the Comptroller of the Currency). I worked with different bank examiners each week who specialized in different areas like capital markets or retail credit, but sometimes I did not have a specific task to do for that examiner. I really enjoyed learning and working with examiners who were specialized in their specific field though.

Advice

I could not have found this internship opportunity without HACU (Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities) who matched me with the OCC team in Boston. HACU is a great organization that helps students majoring in any field find internship opportunities around the United States. I really wanted an internship out of my comfort zone and state which is exactly what HACU helped me find! HACU not only helped me secure this opportunity, but paid for my round-trip airfare to Boston, flew me to the HACU orientation in Washington, D.C., and found me housing! I encourage all students to apply to HACU and if students are interested in learning more about bank supervision, I suggest researching the OCC's internship/career options online!
